The Rotary Club of South Hilo Foundation recently donated $600 to Na Wai Ola Public Charter School’s third-grade class, led by kumu Jason Wong.

The money was used for curriculum support and purchased a chess set for each of the 22 students, as well as materials for a science project using student-built CO2 cars and rockets, and a math project constructing birdhouses.

In addition to the financial support, eight Rotary Club of South Hilo members volunteered two hours of their time recently to help the class build the wooden birdhouses.

“Using a saw is not as easy as it looks, and what was done in two hours with South Hilo Rotary took me weeks to do on my own last year,” Wong said. “Together, we helped third-graders add another dimension to the lines they had drawn on a piece of wood.

“Having the financial and volunteer support of South Hilo Rotary is huge. They spent their morning clamping wood to sawhorses, showing kids how to use a handsaw, and then they bravely held the pieces together as the kids hammered away on 22 homes for birds.”

The Rotary Club of South Hilo is made up of local business, professional and civic leaders who meet regularly to form great friendships and do good works.

“Making birdhouses with the keiki at Na Wai Ola made my week!” said Rotarian Emily Emmons. “Projects like this are why I am a proud member of Rotary.”

The club meets at noon every Tuesday at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The club will host its annual Hilo Huli fundraiser May 1 at Coconut Island.
